One thing that many newcomers to digital photography find most challenging is getting the correct exposure for their digital photos. This can also be challenging for more experienced photographers. One of the great things about digital photography is that digital photography lets us use PhotoShop and other photo editing software to make corrections after the digital photo has already been taken, but it’s certainly better to get it right to begin with.

Most people take their digital camera out of the box, charge up the camera batteries, make sure the exposure setting is on automatic and never change it. However, using all the settings on your camera is not really that complicated. It just takes a little information and some practice. Here are some tips to get you going in taking more control over your digital photos.

First, decide what you want to emphasize in your photo. Are you taking a digital photo of a child against a dark background? Is the sunlight overly bright, or is it a hazy day? Perhaps the child is in a filed of flowers with a dark forest in the background. Do you want to be sure the child’s face or clothing is correctly exposed, or do you want to emphasize nature and make sure the trees in the forest stand out? Your exposure settings might have to change to emphasize what is most important in the photo to you.

Second, you need to decide whether you want the camera to decide on the exposure, or whether you want to make some or all of the decisions about exposure. Most modern digital cameras give you a choice of exposure modes, including so-called programs. For example, there might be a stylized symbol of a mountain for landscape photographs or a profile of a runner for action photos.

If you select one of these modes, the camera can then use one of its internal programs to make decisions about shutter speed and camera lens aperture. The camera will select the settings the manufacturer has decided is best, on average, for these kinds of photos. For example, if you’re taking a landscape photo, you can always just set the camera on the landscape photo setting and let the camera make all the decisions. The problem is, you may not be in an average situation for your landscape or action photo. If so, it’s time to get into a more lands-on mode, and take more control over how your digital photos will look.

In addition to auto exposure, nearly all digital cameras come with settings for aperture priority, shutter priority and manual modes. The cameras aperture setting determines how large the opening is in the lens that lets the light through. The shutter speed is how long the lens stays open. The larger the aperture, the more light comes through, so if the aperture increases (more light), the shutter speed must also decrease (open a shorter period of time) to make a correct exposure.

When you use the aperture mode, you control how large the lens opening is. With a small lens opening, you can have a very sharp focus on one object in your picture, but objects that are not the same distance from the camera will not be as sharp. If the aperture opening is larger, objects up close and not so close to the camera can both stay in focus (greater depth of field). To compensate for that, when you increase or decrease the aperture, the camera will adjust the shutter speed up or down.

This is great if you’re taking a close-up of a flower and want it to be extra-sharp. But if you photography a moving object, you r must have your shutter speed set fast enough to stop the motion. This needs to be at least 1/125th of a second if you are following the motion with your camera. If you are shooting a scene with motion in it, you probably need to be anywhere from 1/250th to 1/1000th. When the shutter speed is increased, there will be less time for light to come through the lens, so the lens opening (the aperture) must be larger to compensate. You can set the shutter speed in the shutter priority mode. Then the camera will adjust the aperture to match.

Finally, you can switch to fully manual mode for total creative control over your digital photos. This may require more decisions than you think you will want to make, but it does give you total artistic control because it allows you to break the rules tying the aperture and shutter speed together. Manual settings are more than we can get into in this article. We will cover this in a separate article.

Finally, the best part of digital photography is that, in most cases, if a photo doesn’t come out just like you want it, unless it’s one of those once in a lifetime shots, you can always take it over. So be sure, especially if you’re on a trip or at a special occasion, to scroll through your photos before you leave. Then if a picture didn’t come out like you wanted, you can always try again.

The ?Camera Dollars Income System eBook? written by Brian Moore claims to contain everything you need to know to make money with your digital camera. This is one of the few books currently available on the market today with the type of hardnosed information and resources those bent on doing digital photography work will ever need. Other books I have seen seem outdated ? being primarily theoretical and not very helpful in today’s market — when compared with the freshness of Moore’s eBook.

Brian Moore has been earning a very high income for more than two years while using this system. He continues to make his living as a free-lance digital photographer. His advice is timely and useful.

The ability of the layman to earn a living by selling his photos is a fairly recent phenomenon in digital photography circles. Moore does an admirable job of breaking down the whole business of digital photography without getting bogged down in the history of its development.

His audience is clearly the layman with a digital camera who wants to earn a part-time or full-time income selling his photos on the internet. In this eBook, you?ll learn:

‘How to’ earn ongoing residual revenue from each digital photo you submit online;

About a relatively unknown photography market that is exploding thanks to the internet;

How to ensure you are getting the best fee possible for each photo you submit online;

How NOT to get taken advantage of and how to ensure you are paid a fair price for your photos;

Resources to find out what buyers are looking for and why buyers are buying photos;

Who pays the highest rates ? and how to market your photos to buyers so they will come back again and again for your work;

Ideas to create multiple streams of income from your digital photos such as turning your photos into saleable screen savers;

How to find websites that will practically beg you for your photos – and who?ll be willing to pay a premium for each photo you submit to them;

How to select the right keywords to use with your photos ? use the wrong keywords and your sales may slowly suffer, use the right keywords and sales will soar;

What a “field rep” is and how you can start providing this in-demand service immediately;

How to sell your images on your own website and keep all the profits for yourself ? includes advice on how to post your photos on a web page, how to flood your site with traffic and how to write copy;

How to sell your images offline in your own profitable brick and mortar photography store;

How to make money in the competitive world of celebrity gossip sites ? these tips are extremely powerful and will give you a leg up on your competition;

How to take pictures of sporting events and sell them online ? follow Brian’s tips and he promises you’ll make money;

How to make your images look professional for extra cash even if you are an amateur just starting out ? Brian demonstrates how to get the perfect shot every time with your digital camera;

What to take pictures of ? find out what types of images are in the most demand in this chapter;

How to sell your photos on eBay ? Brian gives some great tips on this and makes it so simple;

There?s a lot more helpful information in the book regarding the finer points of setting up your business. There’s not much fluff and it’s easy to read.

One of the impressive things that became apparent after I had finished the book was that digital photography work does not require you to buy expensive digital photography equipment, create any websites, ship anything, get involved with adult or pornographic content, or to have any special computer skills. It also does not require any extensive customer support.

Moore drives home the fact that digital photography work is growing faster than the supply of available photographers.

Photographers are needed worldwide ? and thanks to the abilities of the Internet, anyone who will take the time to read and follow the instructions in this book has a legitimate chance of earning a very good part-time income or an excellent full-time income as a digital photographer selling photos online.

Because all work is submitted online, this is work one can do from anywhere in the world where there is an internet connection. The eBook tells you exactly how and where to upload the pictures you take onto the internet. Waiting for someone to pay for your photos is the hardest part and if there is a fault with the system, it would be that one would get impatient and stop taking and uploading photos thereby limiting one’s income potential.

This is a comprehensive guide that leaves nothing out of the business equation left unexplained. It describes and gives references to the types of images that are most in demand and where and how to upload your photos for residual monthly income. All in all, this is a helpful and practical how to guide for any erstwhile digital photographer desiring to do digital photography work online.

Digital Photography is a highly complex activity, with a steep learning curve and many advanced techniques that take years to master! However, we all have to start somewhere. So, here’s a list of 5 Great Tips that will ultimately help you improve your digital photography, and set you off on the right foot.

 1. Use a Tripod or Bean-Bag.

Yes, these can be such a pain to carry around, but they’re definitely worth the time. Using a Tripod or alternative such as a bean-bag will add stability to your camera, meaning you have greater control over exposure times and composition. You’ll also never see that annoying camera shake ruin a picture again whilst using a tripod!

 2. Get a High Capacity Memory Card.

Have you ever had one of those photography days which is going perfect? The light was great, your subjects look fantastic, the weather is holding off, your capturing the shots you only dreamed of…Then it happens.. Your Memory Card is full and you don’t have a spare! You could manually sort through and delete, but it’d take hours. It’s a much better idea to spend a bit more and invest in a high capacity memory card. They’re now available up to 8GB!!

 3. Use a UV Filter.

Using a UV filter on your camera lens is a great idea. They’re small circular pieces of glass that screw over the end of your lens, and offer great protection from scratches, dust, finger prints and also filter out UV rays, improving the color of your images. Best of all they’re dirt cheap!!

 4. Add Warmth To Your Tones.

The White-Balance settings on your digital SLR control the tonal effects of your images, so try experimenting with them. Don’t think that just because a setting is called ‘cloudy’ that you can only use it when it is cloudy! In fact, using the ‘cloudy’ setting when taking pictures adds warmth. Perfect for a sunset or evening landscape shot.

 5. Shoot, Shoot, Shoot!

This will obviously depend on your memory card size as discussed in point 2, but is still very important in trying to get those great shots. Simply put, do not rely on a single shot to capture a great image. Imagine taking time finding a fantastic composition, only to find later that the shot you took has a lens flare or dark shadow in it! Its very frustrating indeed! Take several shots for each composition, try slightly changing the angle each time. This way you can compare and choose the best one later. Remember you can always delete the images you don’t want, that’s the beauty of Digital Photography!

Are you looking to get the best quality from your digital SLR? If the answer is yes you need to forget about the auto modes and set your digital camera to RAW.

Setting your digital camera to raw will open up a whole new world of photography. Correctly processed raw images are sharper and contain more accurate colours. The extra information stored when shooting raw will give your image more detail – leaving you more room to experiment in your digital darkroom.

Raw explained: Raw files are a doorway to top-class image quality, which will also allow you maximum control. A raw image contains all the unprocessed data that reads directly from the camera?s sensor. A raw image file does not contain the finished product and you will have more work to do with the digital file but your final image quality should be first class.

For great results you will need to invest in a RAW converter that will enable you to maximise quality and control. A RAW converter is a piece of software that allows you to make all the changes that your image needs. Once you have made all the changes you can save your image to JPEG or to whichever format you need.

Shooting RAW will open amazing new avenues for an amateur photographer or a professional starting to use digital technology for the first time. Pictures with poor colour can be transformed into reasonable images, but this should not be a licence to get sloppy.

The standards of photography are still the same. Your RAW image needs to be exposed correctly; the RAW converter is not capable of making a blurred image sharp; and it can?t change the depth-of-field.

The only frustration when shooting RAW is the extra time spent on the computer, but once you get used to all the new tools with your software, you will soon realise that the changes were worth it.

The true benefits of shooting RAW are quality, control, image flexibility and easy image correction. But be careful – you should always aim for the best results using your camera first.

The exposure compensation feature of your digital camera can be a very effective way to correct the exposures you?re getting in your camera?s fully automatic mode. But it requires taking a series of photos until you have the exposure just right. Here is a simple techniques to take care of some common exposure situations that can fool your camera?s auto exposure system, without as many steps as setting up your digital camera?s exposure compensation feature. It may not work every time, and you may have to go through the steps of using exposure compensation, but it will work many more times than not.

Normally, to determine the correct exposure, your camera will evaluate the brightness of the entire scene you are shooting and will calculate the average brightness of the entire scene. This usually works in most situations, but if you are shooting on a really bright, sunny day, for example, and your main subject is in the shade, the bright sunlight can overwhelm the auto exposure feature, causing your subject to be under-exposed and too dark.

Almost all digital cameras have a feature called exposure lock. This allows you to aim the camera at one scene to let the auto exposure system calculate its settings, and then you can aim the camera again at your real subject and take a shot, while preserving the settings from the first scene. You?ll have to look in your digital camera?s manual to check how to activate the exposure lock on your camera, but for most cameras you push the shutter button halfway down and hold it there to lock the exposure settings.

For example, if a bright sky is making the scene on the ground under-exposed, point the camera down until the scene on the ground fills the viewfinder. If your subject is in the shade, point the camera at the shady area. Lock this exposure setting by pushing halfway down on the shutter button. Then reframe the scene to include the sky. This locked exposure setting may now over expose the sky, but your subject on the ground should be correctly exposed.

Using the exposure lock is a very simple technique to master that should be in the bag of tricks of every digital photographer. Happy shooting, and may all your photos be neither too dark nor too light.

Ben got interested in photography back in college. That time, students still had to load the camera with film and develop the pictures in the dark room.

Ten years later, things have changed. Professional and amateur photographers have shifted to digital cameras. Since Ben was slow in terms of welcoming new technology, this individual decided to do some research first to know more about it.

The bookstore will surely have a lot of books on this topic. After searching through the second shelf, there it was, publications on digital photography.

Ben noticed that most of the books were written at the turn of the century. This is because manufacturers only released a complete line of these products after Y2K.

There were publications available talking about digital photography in general but people who want to know more should get specialized ones.

The specialized ones will teach the individual how to shoot at night, how to achieve black and white color prints in the digital age, infrared photography, how to set up a digital studio and proper lighting in taking each shot.

There are pictures as well as texts so that the person can read first then apply the techniques illustrated in the book.

Famous photographers who have worked for major magazines and newspapers wrote. Be it for money or to spread the word about this art, these are really worth knowing for those who have done this as a hobby or are just starting.

Some other books will also teach the person the different kind of digital cameras that are available in the market. This proves there are pros and cons in choosing one brand over another and how the systems used are very different.

There are other sources aside from books to learn about digital photography. There are people who write articles on the Internet or have websites that have an open forum for those who enjoy this as a hobby.

The main reason why the demand for digital photography is high is because of its affordability. The individual can choose from a wide range of brands that costs less than $500 a piece. The price will be higher for the more high tech versions that professionals will need.

It is one thing to read the book and another to put it into practice. People who decided to get a digital photography book should apply everything that is written to be able to be just as good as those who have been doing for many years.

A few years ago I became interested in digital photography, mainly for web publishing and personal reasons. You know, how nice is it now to NOT have to deal with film, scanning pictures, and the costs of developing all of those “not great” photos that you didn’t know were so bad until you paid to have them developed!

So, at the time I got my first digital camera a friend of mine was playing in a rock band, and needed pictures for their web pages and promotional printings and ads. When I first began to do their photography, I had NO IDEA what it all would lead to… and now I will reveal to you someof the MANY ways to make money, part-time, with your love for photography!

Now, at the clubs my friend’s band played in- a lot of the time they would be in a line-up of 3 bands for the evening, of which I shot live pictures of my friend’s band’s performance. Then I got another idea, I’m there already, usually to finish the night with the band, so I started to take pictures of the other bands. Afterwards, as they were breaking down their equipment, I introduced myself as the other bands photographer, and explained that I liked their music and look- and also took pictures of them also.

I got the names of the band members, jotted down notes about which instruments each one played, and then got a mailing address to reach them. I told them that I was going to print up some proof sheets and send them off to them… all were very agreeable and willing (and why not, it doesn’t cost them a thing).

Then I printed the proof sheet(s), and selected three of what I thought were the best- of which I made a little bigger on a seperate sheet and used Photoshop to refine and enhance the images prior to printing (all on my little ink-jet printer).

I composed a form letter that I could customize for each mailing explaining details like:

- The first proof sheet was all of the raw digital images

- The second one with the larger images was digitally self enhanced

- I would professionally print any pictures they wanted for XXX cost (considering mailing costs, printing costs at a local printing shop, labor for digital enhancement, and healthy profit margin)

- For any order I would give them a CD with ALL of the photos in digital form for them to use any way they wanted

- Add my contact information

- And finally my availability to book shootings with them in the future

Now I could personalize this form letter and send it with the proof sheets to the band, and when I would call them about a 8 days after I made the mailing to ask them if they recieved the proof sheets and which ones they liked (and I liked)- and I simply asked for an order.

It was amazing how well this worked, and I expanded the idea.

I would go to fund-raising events, marathons, special events hosted by radio station personalities… always getting the contact information for reaching whoever is in charge of promotions and following the same system!

As you go along, you realize some other benefits to you new “business”- like free admissions (and no club cover charges), press passes, exciting opportunities to meet interesting people and celebrities, discount drinks, and much more! It’s amazing what people will GIVE you, if you just ask!

Then there are the home-business tax deductions that are eye-opening in themselves!

As soon as you can, upgrade to more professional equipment so you can not only “play”the part, but also “look” the part. Print up business cards, and make up your own porfolio of your “best” digitally enhanced photos of all kinds of subjects and previous shootings.

Seriously, this could turn your love for digital photography into an exciting lifestyle and an income that could surpass your present one!

But then again, I know I have only just scratched the surface with professional digital photography, and I’m sure you now have just entered a “think-tank” that will spur many more ideas for you to make digital photography more than just a love. Make it a great life!

Aperture: The aperture is an opening that allows light to travel into the digital camera?s interior where the sensor is situated.

Digital Zoom: Digital zoom is the blowing up of one aspect of the picture. Using digital zoom will reduce picture quality.

JPEG: JPEG describes the compression of a digital image. The Joint Photo Experts Group devised a compression ratio that reduces the picture size. This reduction will lead to a substantial loss of picture quality.

Megapixels:One megapixel equals one million pixels.

Memory: Memory is the storage space capability that the digital camera holds to store pictures.

1 MP Camera: A 1 MP Camera can shoot a picture that consists of one million pixels.

Optical Zoom: The optical zoom changes a lens? focal length and magnification.

Pixels: Pixels is an abbreviated term (Picture Element) that has a numerical value between 0-255. There are three color channels (red, green and blue) in each pixel.

PPI: PPI (pixels per inch) describes picture quality. The higher the PPI, the clearer and more resolved the photo.

RAW/NEF: These are two terms that both mean the uncompressed image as shot by the camera. The RAW format is used by Canon digital cameras and the NEF format is used by Nikon digital cameras.

Sensor: The sensor is the digital strip within the digital camera that receives the light. The sensor’s job is comparable to the negative in a non-digital camera.

Shutter Speed: Shutter Speed refers to the length of time the digital camera?s aperture is open and allowing light inside the camera.

TIFF: TIFF stands for Tagged Image File Format, a format that uses a very large file size, but has the advantage of no loss of information.

White Balance: White balance adjusts the white color quality of your image. Digital cameras usually have adjustable settings for electronic flash, shade, sunlight, fluorescent lighting and tungsten lighting.

Remember that 3.2 megapixel digital camera you bought back in 2000 or 2001 and paid real good money for? Today for almost that same kind of money, you can own hot digicams (short for digital cameras) in 10+ megapixels, or small point-and-shoot models with killer zoom or digital SLRs (single lens reflex) cameras, with a bunch of options.So if you think you’re ready for a new digicam…you’ll really be impressed with these!

The Sony Alpha DSLR-A100

This was Sony’s first digital SLR (single lens reflex) camera, with 10.2 megapixel APS CCDimage sensor, and supports a total of 19 Sony lenses + most Konica-Minolta Maxxum mount lenses, according to specs. This camera isn’t cheap. At last check, just the body cost in the vicinity of $1100. or around $1500. with the DT 18-70mm, F3.5 to 5.6 lens + 75-300mm telephoto lens.

If you like great head shots, telephoto lens are ideal. Actually with a reverse ring, I was able to use my old Nikon lens as a macro. This camera also features a two-part anti-dust system, which makes sure that those dark spots caused by dust deposits on on the sensor when switching lens, don’t show up on your photos.

Fujifilm FinePix F30

Reasonably priced, approximately $500., this camera is a 6.3 megapixel which works great in low-light situations, thanks to its full resolution ISO speeds up to 3200. If you’ve forgotten what this means already, travel back to the home page. Combined with a smart i-Flash system, and3x optical zoom lens, you’ve got yourself a great pocket-size camera.

Sony’s Slim DSC-T10

At 89.7 x 54.9 x 20. 6 mm, this is one small camera. But don’t let its size fool you. At 7.5 megapixels, the Cyber-shot is Big with its Super Steady Shot optical image stabalization, which helps prevent blurring caused by motion and low-light conditions. It comes equipped with a 3x Carl Zeiss-Tessar optical zoom lens, a large 2.5 inch LCD (liquid crystal display) screen, and its battery, can deliver up to 250 shots per charge. The price is around $450.

I’m A Nikon Man – The Nikon D80

Again, this is not a cheap camera by any means. The body alone sells for approximately $1250. But this camera is designed for those who demand professional quality. At 10.2 megapixel CCD imaging sensor (meaning yielding pictures as detailed as 3,872 x 2,592 pixels), it also features a 12-bit image processing engine, as well as instant 0.18 seconds start-up time, with a very fast shutter response, and get this…a high efficiency rechargeable battery that can deliver up to 2700images per charge.

What About Canon? The Power Shot SD700IS

This well rounded, point-and-shoot digital camera, with image stabilization (helps prevent shaky and blurry images) sells for about $600. It’s a 6 megapixel with a 4x optical zoom lens, with an ISO rating from 80 to 800. It also has a bright 2.5 inch color LCD screen.

The EasyShare V705

Kodak boast the world’s smallest ultra-wide angle optical zoom digital camera. It’s also a dual lens camera, one lens for regular shots and the other for group shots. This dual lens camera has a 7 megapixel sensor with a 5x optical zoom.You can also shoot VGA video at 30 frames per second with sound. It sells for approximately $400.

All of these cameras can be viewed on their respective websites from the manufacturers. One thing you need to keep in mind when buying a digicam is, what’s your purpose for the camera? Some of you will say to take pictures. Granted, that’s what a camera is for. But, what if your preference is close up shots (the telephoto type), just of your child’s face with a blurry background. You really need to think of your needs, then shop. Not the other way around.

You say “you don’t have time to read about all these little extras”. Next time you feel frustrated about a bad picture becauseyou didn’t find it necessary to know every little detail about a certain camera, remember the litlle details. They’re truly the details that count.

I admit it – I’ve been slow to embrace the digital photography phenomenon. As a hobbyist, I have two film cameras, an old manual focus Nikon and a newer autofocus Canon Rebel, and I resisted the temptation to indulge in a digital camera up until recently, even though each of my children had them for years now. But recently my father gave me his mid-priced Olympus (he didn’t like the menus), and I’ve been giving it a try. And, to my surprise, I even like it.

My favorite thing about the camera is pretty obvious – no film. My father gave me two (bless him) substantial memory cards, and I just don’t run out of film. I don’t pay to develop photos that I don’t really want now that I’ve seen them (I don’t pay to develop photos period), and since I can actually see how they look on the spot, I can delete bad shots to save the space for more. Taking lots of shots helps me improve, and improves the chances of a better than average photograph as well, and now it’s free. My camera has settings on it that allow me to pretend I have film – I can set film speed and worry about aperture/shutter speed combinations just like with my other cameras, so I can still use what I already know about photography, which I really like. And I love not having to wait to see how the pictures came out.

The other really cool thing about digital photography is photo editing. I haven’t invested in Photoshop yet, but I have my eye on the Elements program for next year. I just use Google’s free Picasa and sometimes my PhotoDeluxe editor (came free with my scanner), and even then I can do an incredible amount of really exciting things with my pictures. The best is being able to correct poor exposures (I admit, I often don’t notice backlighting). With a couple of adjustments, what would have been a throwaway photo can become a keeper! I remove red-eye easily, sharpen focus, adjust contrast, warm up colors, and remove excessive unwanted tint (such as from lamplight). Cropping is my favorite – those lucky few who have their own darkroom crop their photos routinely, but us regular folks used to have to take what we got – no longer! We can pick and choose, and glory in removing unwanted background, excess sky – we can even remove most of the shot and make it a close-up. Resizing is a snap – want some wallets? No sweat. 8×10, 5×7, some oddball size – just a simple selection will do it. And don’t forget special effects. Depending on the editor, you can turn your photo into a painting, add glow, filters, neon – your imagination can go wild!

When you have your masterpiece ready to go, you can print it on photo paper at home, or you can send it out for processing. Through Picasa, you can click and send it to a processor via the internet, and get your professionally printed photos in the mail – but only the ones you have decided you want. You can upload your photos to a web page, email them, use them in a blog or on MySpace – they are easy to share.

So, as you can see, I am a digital photography convert. There is so much fun in having this kind of control over your work that it has actually rejuvenated my love of photography. If you haven’t already converted too, think about it. It really is a blast.
