Did you know that costume parties once were thought scandalous in Britain for a long time, because men and women connected them with low values? In the US, however, costumes and fancy has, primarily, as of the mass appeal of Halloween and pantomimes. Some of my best childhood recollections are of Halloween costume parties, when I think I almost covered the pantheon of superheroes. The coolest bit is that fancy dress are still an important part of our Halloween, although we are now too old for trick-or-treating habit.
In the West, fancy dress parties are most probably to have started in Britain. The masked balls of the 18th century were perhaps the first costume parties. Under Queen Victoria they introduced fancy dress parties, which then grew in popularity. In modern eras, both in Britain and in the US, costumes have become the center of most modern celebrations. So a lot of of our favored scenes from theater involve fancy dress parties, isn’t that right? Do you recall Mean Girls, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Birdcage?
Scary or funny?
It is no surprise then that costumes and fancy dresses have become a huge market to cater to the demands of the populations. There are 2 chief reactions you could want to get from people when you choose to turn out in a costume. Either wish to frighten them, or make them laugh. As a result, the most liked costumes are those of folk from horror or comedy films. Dracula is one of the favorites, as are Laurel and Hardy and Charlie Chaplin. Recently, there is popularity about TV programs, like Friends.
Pick and choose
So how can you get yourself a costume? First, naturally, you must decide what you want to turn up as, after carefully considering the type of the affair. When you’ve done that, you have 2 options. You can go to a great costume shop and try on a few and finally decide on one. And even, when in the place, you might feel so attracted to a certain dress that you may give up your 1st costume thought altogether. The 2nd option would be search for an outfit online, amongst the variety of sites that offer costumes. Though this is obviously the simpler choice, it could turn out to be more troublesome than it looks. Especially if your dress comes late, or if you discover that it fits badly or is constructed of sub-standard material, or that it is not how you had thought it to be. It’s not for nothing that they say, seeing is believing.
Make your own
Of course, you could make your own fancy dress ensemble. This is especially useful for pantomimes, when you can put together Robin Hood outfits from old leggings, adding trimmings to suitable jackets and feathers to old berets. If you happen to oen any needlework abilities also, you can give old outfits or costumes a whole new look and casually slip on a brand-new persona without costing more than a few dollars. Now how about that —- self-made fancy dresses —- for a new party thought?
