– The scope of black and white digital photography is not only about portraits and landscapes. There are thousand and one things that you can express with black and white photographs. So the next time you have the digital camera in hand, focus on abstract shoots. Yes, I’m obsessive-compulsive when it comes to finding and shooting framed compositions. I discovered this one last week while roaming around Plant Hall in infrared mode. I almost didn’t post anything here today, my hands are pretty cramped after creating seventy-five pages of new shopping cart code for the latest event photo gallery. I don’t think this brave new world of digital photography is necessarily easier than film, its more a matter of a different set of skills and challenges. Some days I feel like all I’ve done is traded chemistry for carpal tunnel.

04-28-06: The Shot, The Shooter
Taken with a 17mm full-frame fisheye stopped all the way down. What I didn’t realize at the time is that while I was composing this I became the subject of a shot myself…At home in my natural element. Kathy Porupski, one of my first students and possibly the busiest person I know, occasionally finds time to rip herself away from her hectic schedule and accompany me on a shoot. Children’s dance competitions are her bread-and-butter photography work but just like me she loves to escape to the wild places and shoot just for herself. This is an effective use of leading lines and of course I like her choice of subject matter. Kathy has a new website where she currently displays her dance photos for parents to buy and will soon be displaying some of her nature and fine art photos. Since I did the original design work for the site I’m more than happy to give it a blatant plug here.

Making a Difference with Chakra Meditation

Posted by – June 29, 2009

Meditation is considered as a powerful form of self-realization and self-healing. There are various methods by which you can meditate, but perhaps, the most potent of all is the Chakra Meditation. This process can also be called Chakra Balancing, or Chakra Healing which are essentially the same thing.

Chakra Meditation – Basics

Quite simply, Chakra Meditation refers to the process of balancing and energizing all the 7 energy centers (Chakras) in order to align the flow of energy through them. These 7 energy centers, or the Chakras, are.

*Root Chakra. This chakra is situated at the base of our spine. It is related to the element earth. It controls our health and prosperity.

*Orange or Naval or Sacral Chakra located at the center of abdomen and related to the element ‘Water’. It governs our emotions and sexuality.

*Power Chakra. This chakra is also called Solar Plexus and lies on our abdomen just above the naval. This is related to the element fire which governs our metabolism. It also governs our will power and our self confidence.

*Heart Chakra located at the center of the chest and related to the element ‘Air’. It governs love, compassion, and relationships in our lives.

*Throat Chakra. This charka relates to sound we make or hear and governs our communication ability, creative faculties and reverberations.

*Brow Chakra. This chakra lies between the brows on our forehead and controls the process of visualizing the information stored in our brain.

*Crown Chakra governing your wisdom and knowledge is located at the top of the head and related to the element ‘thought’.

By concentrating and synchronizing these vital energy centers, one can achieve a calming influence on the mind resulting in stress-free existence and a contented life. Chakra Meditation also helps in naturally healing any ailment related to these 7 vital energy centers.

Chakra Meditation – The Process

Chakra Meditation is the sum total of the following three techniques:

*Grounding Technique refers to the process whereby, your body feels connected with Earth. The visualization involves assuming a root growing from your body and entering into the Earth, thus, transfixing your body to the ground. With some intense focus and determination, you can achieve this state of Chakra Meditation.

*Centering Technique, which aims at preparing your body to receive the benefits of Chakra Meditation. Just take three to five deep breaths and visualize relaxation of every body part from toe to crown. In simple words, just tighten and relax each body part from toe to the crown, and then visualize the act of centering a pot on a pottery wheel.

*Relaxation Technique refers to the process whereby, the body feels relaxed by an act of visualization that suits an individual the best. Every individual is free to adopt his or her own relaxation method.

Here is one of the most common methods of performing Chakra Meditation.

*Sit or lie down in a comfortable posture like Padmasan.

*Every stress-causing factor should be addressed and effort should be made to reduce or eliminate the stress as far as possible. Start with loosening the clothing you are wearing. Identify other similar straining factors and eliminate them. And finally, close your eyes.

*Take relaxing breaths – neither too fast nor too slow. Just give up your control on the breath, and let it flow naturally.

*The next step relates to feeling every part of your body from toe to head in that direction. While your eyes are closed, try to feel everything that you would’ve seen with open eyes, like earth, air, clothes, surroundings etc. The idea is to feel awareness even with closed eyes.

*Initially, your efforts will be met with stiff resistance from negative thoughts and emotions. Don’t suppress them! They’ll disappear with time and practice.

*Do not resist your awareness of any part of your body or things around you.

Do this exercise for any length of time and at any time of the day!

Digital Infrared Photography – A Cut Above The Rest

Posted by – June 28, 2009

Do you know what infrared is all about? Infrared is a spectrum of light further than that which you normally see. If you wish to take “infrared” pictures all you need to do is filter out the visible light and allow the infrared spectrum all the way through to the lens. The best you can do is use a Wratten filter, which you can avail from any professional camera shop. These Wratten filters are very dense filters, nearly opaque in appearance.

Digital infrared photography has revolutionized the art of photography in the recent past. The film or CCD sensor is sensitized to infrared light in infrared photography. In this type of photography the wavelengths vary from 700 nm to about 900 nm. An “infrared filter” ensures that the infrared (IR) light pass through to the camera but obstructs the entire observable light spectrum.

The moment these filters are clubbed with the infrared-sensitive film or sensors, the in-camera effects can be achieved. Like for instance the false-color or black and white images with an illusory or sometimes garish appearance. This happens mainly because of the foliage strongly reflecting in the similar way light is reflected from snow. What else the infrared photographs does is that it produces very dark skies and dispersion of atmospheric mist, brought about by reduced Rayleigh scattering and Mie scattering in the environment in contrast to visible light.

The things you should consider in digital infrared photography are as follows: – Focus, once the filter is put on. – Now, all that is needed is to lay the infrared filter in front of the lens. – You need to enable the manual exposure mode to get the proper exposure. – Remember to rest the camera to a higher ISO rating than standard. – Finally, when you are through with your infrared shot and you want certain manipulations, you can do it with the help of any image editing Software. Whether you want to remove the color, balance the image levels, sharpen the edges or even make it look grainy or add edge glow, all can be done via such software.

Setting your camera to B&W mode is a safer option as infrared filters get rid of most of the usable color information. Make sure that the incandescent lamps don’t put out much infrared. You may come across another problem, as you’ll find out that when you filter all the visible light, exposure times will be quite extensive.

You can convert an appropriate digital camera for digital infrared photography. But factually speaking, it makes more sense to leave any camera conversions to experts to be in safe hands.

Digital infrared photography, no doubt adds a new dimension in the world of photography.

Digital cameras have never been more affordable than they are today. Just a mere six years ago at the turn of the 21st century a 2 mega pixel digital camera was going for nearly $900. Now you can buy three times as much camera for less than half of that. Digital SLR cameras of professional quality are affordable for the average consumer. Stores can?t keep them on the shelves. But, once you get the camera home you can run into a whole new set of problems if your computer is not ready for digital photography.

In order to make your transition to digital photography a smooth one you should take inventory of your computer system to make sure it can handle some of the files that are being created by the camera. Or, if you?re thinking about getting into digital photography, you might want to budget for a few things that will make working with your images in the computer a pleasant experience.

If you?re considering a brand new computer to go with your digital camera the best advice I can give you is buy the biggest and faster machine you can afford! By that I mean make sure it?s got the latest and fastest processor. If it doesn?t come with it already, I would suggest upgrading the RAM (that?s the memory the computer uses to perform the tasks you want it to do) to the maximum it can hold. I advise at least 1 gigabyte of RAM. Then there is the hard drive. Again, I would purchase the largest drive you can possibly afford. The files coming out of digital cameras are large and need plenty of storage space. And if you can?t buy a large hard drive, make sure you computer has a CD/DVD burner. Then you can store your photos onto them. Don?t forget to do a back up of each CD. That way if one gets broken or scratched you?ll always have another with your photos on it.

And, last but not least, in order to manipulate the images and get them ready for printing or the Web, you?ll need some kind of photo manipulation software. The gold standard in photo software is Adobe Photoshop. They are presently up to version CS2 (Creative Suite 2). But, if you?re just a beginner, you will often get Adobe Photoshop Elements included with your camera or printer. This is a simpler version and can get you started until you?re ready to upgrade.

In order to view your images properly you?ll need a good monitor. Today there are as many types of monitors as there are computers. But, the key element you should look for is the resolution and the monitor?s ability to reproduce colours. Also, the size of the monitor will help you see the images more accurately and make sure the colours of the photos are accurate and sharp. Each monitor will have a more truthful reproduction of proper brightness and contrast again giving you an exact reproduction of how the final output of the photograph will look.

Speaking of output you?ll also want to purchase a printer if you intend to make prints of your images. There are many printers on the market, but the three leaders in photo printers are: Epson, HP and Canon. All make a very good printer, but each will boast it?s own features and benefits. Some of the things to look for are the resolution that the printer is capable of reproducing. You?ll want a high resolution printer to make sharp and accurate prints. What type of ink does the printer use? Cheap printers use cheap ink and that mean if you print a photograph it will not stand the test of time. Poor inks fade after repeated exposure to UV rays, certain gases in the air, moisture and humidity. So, make sure your printer has archival inks making the final print more resitant to these elements that can fade your print.

Getting your images from the camera to the computer can be a tricky affair. The camera manufacturers will include a USB cable to attach your camera to the computer and upload them to the hard drive of your computer. I recommend you do not use this method! Using the camera to upload images to a computer is an extreme drain on battery power and if your camera runs out of battery power while it is uploading, the images maybe lost or the digital storage media maybe damaged. I suggest you purchase a ?card reader?. Card readers are a usually a USB device (you can also buy Firewire versions) that you plug into your computer. They require no external power source and often require no drivers or software to operate them. You can buy them to hold your size of digital storage media or you can buy a card reader that can read all the major media cards on the market. That way if you have more than one digital camera, each taking a different type of card, or you upgrade your camera that uses a different card you still have a reader that will do the job.

The last burning question I get often is: what?s better a PC or a Mac. Normally I won?t take sides, but having used both types of computers in digital photography I unequivocally say that Mac?s make the best and easiest computers to use. They may cost more, but you will never have half the problems you?ll have with a PC. That?s just my opinion.

You?ll enjoy your new digital camera to the fullest if you have a computer that is outfitted and ready to handle your digital images. Happy shooting!

Important Tips When House Painting

Posted by – June 28, 2009

The most popular project for a lot of homeowners
is painting their house.  A lot of people enjoy do it yourself projects around the house.  To them, painting seems like an easy enough task.

If that is you, I would like to offer as a Painter in San Diego.Hopefully my years of experience will prevent disasters and messes to occur when you do a project like house painting.

First off, you have to pick the correct paint type and of coures the correct paint colors for your home.  Sounds like this goes without saying, but a novice may not know the difference in picking paint for an exterior vs. paint for interior.  Thankfully a lot of home improvement companies have helpful staff to help you out, just like my staff of my San Diego painting company.

Second, is preparing the paint.  Surprisingly, the most crucial aspect of painting is not the actual act of painting, but in the preparation of the paint.

The time you invest in properly preparing will show in the quality of your paint and painting job.

So you need to clean out the room you are going to be painting in.A clear and clean room makes it that much easier to do a good job of painting.

Also, when you prepare, make sure the surface is clean.Don’t just say to yourself, since you are painting over everything, the paint will hide it all.A wall that is dirty with stains and other dirt, makes it harder for the paint to cover. This little tip can save you a lot of time and money because when it is clean you need less coats of paint.

Third you will need sandpaper.Sandpaper allows you to smooth out the rough surfaces which makes it easy to apply a smooth coat of paint.

Fourth, you will want to have and use a caulk gun.All walls are far from perfect. It could have cracks on the wood base or trim.A caulking gun will cover it up and help make your surface smooth.

As you can see, these tips are all designed to help make your painting job go well.It helps get rid of the hassles associated with things being in the way.Or having to fix a wall that has blemishes and would need to be painted over.  All designed to make your job easier.

Follow these tips and you will not only be happy with the outcome but this will add some value to your home.

Now if you feel maybe this is a bit much to tackle, especially when you consider the value of your home being on the line. Give your local painters San Diego a call.

Some film reviews are listed below. You can get to a good film download site through the search engines. You can find good results with by searching “Online DVDs”, “Movies On Line” and “Net Movie Downloads”.

Playing God: This film is a preposterous tale of drug addicted ex-surgeon Duchovny employed by gangster Hutton to be the personal crisis medical expert for his shot-up and sliced cronies. The improvised medical therapy is so entirely comical that it upstages the ridiculousness of the tale line. Why this film was ever made is genuinely a case for The X Files. Cast includes David Duchovny, Timothy Hutton, Angelina Jolie, Michael Massee, Peter Stormare, Gary Dourdan, John Hawkes, and Andrew Tieman. (93 minutes, 1997)

Gun the Man Down: Injured outlaw avows retribution on cohorts who left him in the middle of a stickup gone badly. Cast includes James Arness, Angie Dickinson, Robert Wilke, and Emile Meyer.  (78 minutes, 1956)

The House of Yes: On a stormy day in 1983, a youthful gentleman brings his fiancee home to meet his broken Washington, D.C, family, containing his demented twin sis, Jackie-O, whose fantasies in Jacqueline Kennedy have lengthened to the point ofreinacting  the JFK assassination-with live bullets. Well made black comedy, based on the stage production by Wendy MacLeod. Cast includes Parker Posey, Josh Harnilton, Tori Spelling, Freddie Prinze, Jr., Genevieve Bujold, and Rachael Leigh Cook. (90 minutes, 1997)

The Search for Signs of Inteligent Life in the Universe: This is a witty re-creation of Lily Tomlin’s 1985 one female Broadway show. Her characterizations run the gamut from box woman to juvinille delinquent to New Age Lady, with much of the material in a feminist vein. The show stars Lily Tomlin obviously. (120 minutes, 1991)

Days of Glory: Moving (and illuminating) fable of North African cadets who joined their French brothers in battle throughout WW2 even thougth they were on no account acknowledged as equals. The film is constructed on a time worn recipe of following raw initiates as they become stiffened battle Heros by concentrating on a handful of men and personalizing their tale. This film brings this forgotten chapter of history comes to lucid life. Cast includes Jamel Debbouze, Samy Naceri, Roschdy Zem, Sami Bouajila, Bernard Blancan, Mathieu Simonet, Benoit Giros, Melanie Laurent, and Antoine Chappey. (120 minutes, 2006)

Cry the Beloved Country: Moving redo of the 1951 film based on Alan Paton’s rejoiced novel, in reference to a backwoods pastor (Jones) who, in 1946, makes his first ever trip to the city of Johannesburg in search of his errant child. At the same time prosperous landowner Harris voyages there to claim the body of his child, who has just been killed. We see phenomenal work by Jones, Harris, and a largely foreign cast. Not as understated as the first making, however powerful in its own way. Cast includes Richard Harris, James Earl Jones, Charles S. Dutton, and Vusi Kunene. (120 minutes, 1995)

Sense and Sensibility: Lucid, modern-day look at Jane Austen’s novel in reference to 2 recently impoverished siblings one impulsive and flirtatious, the other persistently hindered and made to suppress her sensations of love. Impeccably cast and acted, a vigorous and moving film dealing with how dissimilar identities handled them in early 19th-century England. Thompson won an Oscar for Best Screenplay Adaptation. Cast includes Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, James Fleet, Harriet Walter, Gemma Jones, Elizabeth Spriggs, Robert Hardy, Greg Prudent, Imelda Staunton, Imogen Stubbs, Hugh Laurie, and Tom Wilkinson.  (135 minutes, 1995)

In The lord We Tru$t: Ignorant friar Feldman treks to L.A. to raise money for his monastery. This film is a comedy that is tragically unfunny containing Pryor, who plays God. Cast includes Marty Feldman, Peter Boyle, Louise Lasser, Richard Pryor, Andy Kaufman, Wilfrid Hyde-White, and Severn Darden. (97 minutes, 1984)

Slave Girls: Too glamorous Andress seized by locals and painted in arrangement for sacrifice in a scene essentially equivalent to that prompted by ex-spouse John Derek for current spouse Bo years later in Tarzan, The Ape Man. Cast includes Ursula Andress, Stacy Keach, Claudio Cassinelli, Antonio Marsina, and Franco Fantasia. (93 minutes, 1978)
